The Adventures of TOM SAWYER

La exposición "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" es el feliz resultado de la colaboración de los Departamentos de Inglés y Plástica del IES, como colofón a la lectura del libro de Mark Twain que se ha venido realizando desde Octubre, durante una hora a la semana.

Inicialmente, se investigó (a través de internet) sobre el autor, su biografía y obras, con los que se elaboraron carteles.

A lo largo de la lectura, se realizaron actividades de comprensión sobre el texto y al final, un proyecto en pequeños grupos, dados cuatro temas de trabajo y de los cuales debían elegir obligatoriamente dos:

1. Hacer el retrato ( imagen y texto ) de los dos personajes que más habían llamado su atención.

2. Elaborar el cartel de una película sobre las aventuras de Tom Sawyer.

3. Redactar e ilustrar unas páginas del diario de Becky Thatcher en las que narrase su experiencia en la cueva de Mc Dougal.

4. Investigar sobre el río Mississippi,( usando todos los medios informáticos a su alcance).

Este proyecto, quiere contribuír a fomentar el hábito de trabajo en grupo, el desarrollo del gusto por la lectura ( del texto y la imagen), la comprensión y valoración de otras culturas, el uso de técnicas pictóricas que complementen y enriquezcan el texto...

Una actividad que une, interrelaciona y ayuda a mejorar habilidades y actitudes, nos hace más cultos y más personas.

TOM SAWYER´S EXHIBITION

The exhibition “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” is the great end of a reading
activity which started in October.

It has been done in collaboration with the Art Department of the School.

Students have read Mark Twain´s book. First, they searched information about the author on the Internet and they chose some famous Twain´s quotes. After reading every chapter, they did some comprehension activities and, at the end of the book, they had to do a project, in small groups, about two of the following suggestions:

“1.- Choose two characters from the story. Prepare a page on each character and write a short description of their role in the story. Explain why you chose them. You can include their picture.

2.- Imagine that The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is now a film. Design the advert for the film. Include the times of the performances, the name of the cinema and a short description of the film.

3.- Imagine you are Becky or Tom. In your diary, write a few sentences about your experience in the cave. You must also draw a picture and label the people and the things in it.

4.- Look in an encyclopedia or on the Internet for a picture and information about the Mississippi river. Where is it? How long is it? What is special about it? People can still travel on the Mississippi on a steamboat. Go to a travel agent or surf the Internet and try to get information about trips people can take now. “


It was very successful because students and teachers from different subjects worked together. It helped pupils to improve their English, their drawing and, of course, their knowledge about Literature and American culture.
